Today was a bit of a slow day by BSAO standards. It's been exceptionally rainy and I have a paper to write, so I decided to spend most of today resting or at work. In the late afternoon, for about the only hour it stopped raining today, I took a break from writing about "Stop thief!" (yes, really) and went down the street to the Clarendon Building, a.k.a. the home of the Oxford University Press, to work on a drawing of it for my architecture class. On the way back, I stopped to grab some pie & mash for dinner.
Don't mind if I do.
After picking up dinner, I walked past a candy store, and was reminded of my quest for blackcurrant flavored sweets. Blackcurrants have gone through periods of being banned in the United States, because they aid parasites that are detrimental to the logging industry. So most Americans have no idea what a blackcurrant even is. Before a bit of googling, I was actually more familiar with starfruit than blackcurrant. But our British cousins have a special place in their heart for the blackcurrant. When WWII made it near impossible for Brits to get vitamin C rich fruits, the government encouraged the growth of blackcurrant, and blackcurrant syrup was given to poor children to enrich their diets. All this makes me want to take a class in the history of food...
After a bit of searching, I found these lovlies: UK Starburst
After a long day, I hung up my Union Jack bunting and set out my new posters...my room feels "homey" now!
Hey Grace! My name is Halle, my mom (Phyllis) works with your mom (Judy) at the hospital and I have heard so many great things about you! I was so excited to hear that you would be doing a study abroad program in the United Kingdom, and creating a blog on your trip.
ReplyDeleteI have ALWAYS wanted to travel to Europe, especially the UK, for the longest time. I am planning to do a study abroad program during my sophomore year of college, so hopefully I will be able to go.
